Holi is celebrated in Nepal as Phagu Purnima in the month of March. It is one of the national festivals of Nepal and hold both religious and social significance. According to our religious belief, Holi is celebrated to mark the victory by Narasimha (reincarnation of God Vishnu) over a demon called Hiranyakashipu. It is also celebrated the burning of Holika (an evil aunt of Prahlada) who tried to kill Prahlad by trick.
Holi is the festival of colors that join everyone to one another with respect, love and joy. During Holi festival, people walk through their neighborhoods to celebrate Holi by exchanging colors and spraying colored water on one another. A popular activity is the throwing of water balloons at one another, sometimes called lola (meaning water balloon). Many people mix Bhang (made from cannabis, milk and spices) in their drinks and food, as is also done during Shivaratri. It is believed that the combination of different coolers at this festival takes all sorrow away and makes life itself more colorful.
